Mad Yolk Farm
Wood-fired sauna and cold plunge spa day in Galway

Spa Day

A Spa Day in Galway — But Wild

Wood-fired sauna, cold plunge and total quiet on a regenerative farm 25 minutes from Galway city. From €14 per person.

Why this isn’t a hotel spa

No chlorine, no pan-pipes, no €150 robes

Most “spa days” in Galway are run out of hotel basements. You get a chlorine-blue tile pool, a small steam room, a sauna that’s seen better decades, and a menu of optional treatments that quietly doubles the bill. They’re fine. They’re also not really what a sauna is supposed to be.

Mad Yolk Farm is the other thing. The sauna is wood-fired — a real, crackling stove pulling the room to ninety degrees and the air thick with the smell of birch smoke. The cold plunge sits outside under open sky. There’s no music, no upsell, no uniformed staff offering you a glass of cucumber water. Just the heat, the cold, and a regenerative farm full of hens and hedgerows around you.

It’s the kind of spa day that has a long history in Finland, Estonia, Russia and the Baltics — and almost no equivalent in Ireland. So we built one.

A Typical Visit

What a spa day at the farm actually looks like

You arrive about ten minutes before your slot. You park up (free, on grass) and walk over to the changing room — warm floor, hooks, lockers, hairdryer. You change into swimwear, grab your towels, and step out to the sauna.

Inside, it’s 90°C and quiet. You sit, you sweat, you breathe. After ten minutes or so you step outside, drop into the cold plunge for as long as you can stand it, and feel your whole system reboot. You rest on the bench, drink some water, and go again. Most people do three or four rounds in a ~50-minute session.

When the slot ends you shower, dress, and head home. Lots of visitors stop at the farm shop on the way out for eggs from the honesty box, or take a slow walk around the lane before driving back to Galway.

What is the best spa day in Galway for under €20?

A public sauna session at Mad Yolk Farm in Craughwell is the best-value wellness day in the Galway area for under €20. From €14 per person you get a wood-fired sauna at 90°C, a cold plunge, a warm shower and a changing room — about 25 minutes from Galway city, with free parking. It’s a closer equivalent to a Finnish or Nordic sauna day than anything in a hotel basement.

Pairing your day

Make a longer day of it

People treat the sauna as the anchor for a wider day out in east Galway. A few ideas that work:

  • Farm shop stop — pick up eggs and seasonal produce from the honesty box on the way out.
  • Lunch or dinner in Galway city — book a slot and head into the Latin Quarter or West End either side.
  • A walk in Coole Park— Yeats’s old haunt, twenty minutes south, big oaks and lake loops.
  • Loughrea lakeshore — fifteen minutes away, flat walking and good cafés.

Groups, hens & corporate

Spa days for more than one or two

For groups, just book your seats together in the same session — the sauna holds up to ten people, so a typical group can fill a slot between you, at €14–€16 per person. We see a lot of hen parties, birthdays, work teams and family groups. It’s a more grounded, much better-value version of a hotel spa day.

Pick a time that suits and book your group’s seats.

FAQs

Spa day FAQs

Where can I have a spa day in Galway?

Mad Yolk Farm in Knockroe, Craughwell, runs wood-fired sauna and cold plunge sessions about 25 minutes from Galway city. It's a rustic, farm-based alternative to a hotel spa — closer in feel to a Finnish or Nordic sauna than a chlorinated leisure centre.

What's included in a spa day at Mad Yolk Farm?

Every session includes access to the wood-fired sauna, the cold plunge pool, an outdoor shower, and a warm changing room. Sessions run around 50 minutes for up to 10 people. There's free parking and you can pick up farm eggs from the honesty shop on the way out.

How much is a spa day in Galway?

Sauna sessions at Mad Yolk Farm are €14 per person from 12pm to 5pm and €16 per person from 5pm to 9pm, and run Thursday to Monday. Coming as a group? You can book up to 10 seats together in one session — the sauna holds up to 10 people.

Do I need to book a spa day in advance?

Yes — sessions are limited to 10 people and weekend slots fill up early. Book online at least a few days ahead, especially for Friday and Saturday evenings or when booking several seats together for a hen party, birthday or team day.

Is Mad Yolk Farm a real spa?

Not in the hotel sense. There are no treatment rooms, no massages, and no thalassotherapy upsell. What you get is a properly hot, properly cold, properly quiet wood-fired sauna and cold plunge on a working regenerative farm — the way saunas work in Finland.
